ATHENS – Greece’s parliament has approved a major €4 billion defence package aimed at strengthening the country’s air defence capabilities and modernising its military forces.
The plan includes the procurement of a multi-layered air defence system, designed to protect against a wide range of aerial threats, including drones, missiles and advanced aircraft.
Strengthening Greece’s defence shield
The new system will form a comprehensive defensive network, enhancing Greece’s ability to respond to evolving security challenges in the region.
The move comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and reflects Athens’ continued focus on boosting deterrence and national security.
F-16 upgrades approved
As part of the same package, lawmakers also approved the modernisation of 38 F-16 fighter jets, significantly enhancing the operational capabilities of the Hellenic Air Force.
The upgrades are expected to improve radar systems, avionics and overall combat performance, bringing the aircraft closer to advanced NATO standards.
Strategic signal
The €4 billion defence plan sends a clear message of Greece’s commitment to maintaining military readiness and safeguarding its national sovereignty.
The initiative is part of a broader long-term strategy to modernise the armed forces and reinforce the country’s role within NATO.
