The San Antonio Spurs have turned themselves into a title contender this season. It’s the first time in the last few years that the team isn’t tanking for a draft pick. Instead of getting a top-five pick again, the Spurs are fighting for the number-one seed in the West.

Right now, the Spurs sit just three games behind the Thunder for that top spot. After a win over the Clippers, San Antonio has now won 50 games. This is actually the first time that San Antonio has won that many games in the last nine years.

Victor Wembanyama is the biggest reason why the Spurs have won that many games. He has turned into a top-ten player in the NBA in just three years in the league. Wembanyama likes winning this many games, but he has a bolder goal in mind.

Victor Wembanyama Wants the Spurs to Win 60 Games This Year

After beating the Clippers, Wembanyama said that winning just 50 games isn’t enough. He wants to win more.

“There’s growth. There’s still not enough. I want to get at least to at least 60 to balance out my rookie season.”

That would require the Spurs winning at least 10 more games before the season ends. With the roll they are on, that is certainly possible. San Antonio has won 18 of their last 20 games. It doesn’t seem like much of a stretch that they could win another 10 games.

San Antonio has shown that they aren’t just a playoff team, but a real title contender. Wembanyama’s continued growth as a player and his health have helped that. He played just 46 games a year ago before being shut down. He has already played more than that this year.

Wembanyama has been extremely vocal that all he wants to do is win. He doesn’t care about individual awards or accolades. He just wants the team to win as many games as possible. He plays like that as well, especially on the defensive end of the court.

Victor Wembanyama Looks Like a Future MVP

While he likely won’t win the award this year, Wembanyama looks like a future MVP of the league. He is putting up similar stats to what he did a year ago with fewer minutes played per game. His length on the defensive end of the court is the biggest impact anyone has in the league.

Right now, the Spurs have the third-best defense in the league. Only the Thunder and the Pistons have better numbers, and those are the top two teams in the league. San Antonio also has the fourth-best offense, so they are a well-balanced team.

Wembanyama spent the first two years of his NBA career losing a ton of games. Now, he understands what it feels like to be one of the top dogs. He knows that they need to sustain this level of play in the playoffs for it to matter.

San Antonio looks to be the biggest threat to the Thunder in Oklahoma City’s quest to repeat as champions.
