Enzo Fernandez casts doubt on Chelsea future: ‘There’s eight games left, then we’ll see’

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has cast doubt on his future at the club following their 8-2 aggregate defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Fernandez’s Chelsea deal runs until 2032, with the 25-year-old Argentine recently switching agents. He is now represented by a new agency featuring compatriot and former PSG attacking midfielder Javier Pastore.

Speaking to ESPN Argentina immediately after Tuesday’s 3-0 home loss, Fernandez was asked whether he could guarantee he would continue at Chelsea next season.

“I don’t know,” Fernandez said. “I don’t know — right now, I’m thinking here. There are eight games left (in the Premier League) and the FA Cup and then there’s the World Cup and then we’ll see, we’ll see.”

Asked in his post-match press conference about Fernandez’s comments, Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior said: “I haven’t seen that. It’s hard for me to speak on speculation after a game. I need to focus right now on the most important things, which is making sure we get a result against Everton on Saturday.”

Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica for a then-British record transfer fee of €120million (now £103.7m; $138m) in January 2023 and has made 160 appearances for the Stamford Bridge side, winning the Conference League and Club World Cup.

The Argentina international is a core member of the squad, having been named a vice-captain under former head coach Enzo Maresca and worn the armband numerous times in Reece James’ absence. No player has started more games or played more minutes for the club this season.

Fernandez’s comments come after Chelsea exited the Champions League in the round of 16 at the hands of holders PSG. It is their joint-heaviest defeat ever in the competition.

Chelsea return to action on Saturday with a trip to Everton.
