On the morning of March 13, residents of Adana in southern Turkey, not far from the coast of Cyprus, were woken by the wail of sirens. Several locals posted videos on social media of a fast-moving object they spotted in the dark sky, which appeared to be on fire.
The Turkish Defence Ministry announced that the object was an Iranian ballistic missile, fired towards one of the two British military bases in Cyprus, which it said had been “neutralised by NATO air and missile defence assets deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean”.
This was the latest in a series of alarming incidents around Cyprus since the conflict in the Middle East began. Earlier in March, an Iranian drone hit one of the two British bases and a ballistic missile was shot down in Turkish airspace after it was also fired towards a UK military facility on the island.
