Memories Of Greece: Phoenix Exhibit At Byzantine Museum

A recent summer exhibit at the Byzantine Museum showed a collaboration of museums from major cities and islands of Greece. The Museum of Byzantine Culture in collaboration with the Numismatic Museum held a temporary exhibit, “Phoenix-Agon,” in the Kyriakos Krokas wing.

The first section is “Phoenix.” Coins, metals, and dyes, and seals of Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias are displayed. Most seals for coins were destroyed. Fortunately, some seals were not. They are shown in the exhibit. Who was Ioannis Kapodistrias? He is recognized as the founder of the modern Greek state and the architect of Greek independence. He was Greece’s greatest statesman, who put country first. He was assassinated.

A reborn palm tree “Rebirth” sculpture and Phoenix are displayed. Argon medals and commemorations are in the second section. Dies of King Otto, Greek independence fighters such as Bouboulina, Mando Mavrogenis, Kolokotronis and Kyriakakis and 1821 paintings were shown. Chrisa Veneta is the administrator who described the exhibit to us. Her enthusiasm was inspiring.

The world premiere of The Governor, a powerful new film by acclaimed director Yannis Smaragdis, celebrating the life and legacy of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of Greece, will be held on Saturday, November 29, 6 PM, in the Redstone Theater at the Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Avenue in Astoria.
