The Milwaukee Bucks have had a lot of drama surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo. Last offseason, there were rumors that Antetokounmpo wanted to be traded. Antetokounmpo never outright disputed those rumors, and the team built around him.
Milwaukee decided to waive and stretch Damian Lillard and sign Myles Turner. That move looks horrendous now, as the Bucks sit 11th in the Eastern Conference standings. It was reported that the Bucks and Antetokounmpo were looking at being traded at the deadline.
Ultimately, the Bucks didn’t move him. Now, the two sides are involved in a messy fight as the regular season starts to come to an end.
Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo Engaged in Ugly Fight Over Playing Time
Antetokounmpo is nursing a hyperextended knee that will be re-evaluated in a week. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Bucks want to shut him down for the rest of the season. Yet, Antetokounmpo has refused that request and wants to play again this season.
Antetokounmpo has never been a player who engages in load management. He wants to play as many games as possible. Yet, he has played just 36 games this season, and he is on pace to play the fewest number of games in his career.
Milwaukee has just 14 games left this season, and they have almost no hope of catching the Hornets for the 10th spot. That is the final play-in spot. Milwaukee has no shot to do that with how poorly they have played. Antetokounmpo still wants to finish out the year.
The Bucks likely want to shut Antetokounmpo down so that he doesn’t further crater his trade value. There is a very good chance that they ship him out of town in an offseason trade. That would end an era and allow the team to engage in a rebuild.
The Milwaukee Bucks Have to Rebuild This Summer
With how poorly this roster played together, the only logical move is for Milwaukee to move on from Antetokounmpo this summer. They will likely get to keep their first-round pick this summer. Shutting down Antetokounmpo would increase their lottery odds.
Giannis Antetokounmpo doesn’t care about how not playing might help the Bucks in the future if he won’t be on the roster. He only cares about playing the game that he loves. Antetokounmpo clearly believes that the injury he suffered is not a serious one.
At this point, it is unclear which side will win this standoff. If the Bucks don’t let Antetokounmpo play, they risk being assessed a find from the NBA for violating the Participation Policy. If he does play, he is also risking another injury that could crush his trade value.
The Bucks have the eighth-worst offense in the NBA. With Antetokounmpo at odds with the team, that number will only go further down next season if he is off the roster. It would be shocking if he was still playing in Milwaukee when next year starts.
Antetokounmpo loves the city of Milwaukee, but it’s clear he is done dealing with the Bucks as an organization.
