Greece launches digital age checks for tobacco sales – The Greek Herald

The Greek Government has introduced a new digital framework to prevent minors from buying tobacco and alcohol.

Announced by the ministries of Health, Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence, and Citizen Protection, the system places responsibility on sellers to verify customers’ ages using the Gov.gr Wallet and Kids Wallet apps.

Retailers generate a QR code that customers scan to confirm age, with approval or rejection sent to the seller without revealing the exact age.

A Digital Product Control Registry will require all tobacco and alcohol retailers to register by April 16.

The measures also extend to bars and nightclubs, though minors may still attend registered private events.

Selling or supplying these products to minors is now a criminal offence, punishable by up to three years in prison and fines.
