The Sun spotlights tiny Greek island of Lipsi as a hidden luxury escape Greek City Times

The small island of Lipsi is gaining significant international attention following an extensive travel feature in British newspaper The Sun, which highlights it as an authentic Greek destination still largely untouched by mass tourism.

In the article, titled “I visited the tiny Greek island that most Britons want to vacation on — and where only millionaires go,” a journalist recounts their experience after being invited by the local municipality to explore the island. The report showcases Lipsi’s natural beauty, relaxed pace of life, and rich culinary traditions.

The Greek island of Lipsi is making international headlines after being featured by The Sun as a hidden luxury destination. Known for its untouched beauty, crystal-clear waters, and authentic charm, the Dodecanese island is attracting elite travellers without losing its traditional identity.

After spending a week on the island, the writer described it as a place that is “hard to leave,” praising its unique charm and tranquil atmosphere.

Located in the Dodecanese, Lipsi is a cluster of 24 small islets known for its crystal-clear waters, secluded beaches, picturesque coves, and unspoiled landscapes. Despite its growing appeal, the island has managed to retain its traditional character and low-key identity.

The article notes that while Lipsi attracts high-end visitors — with luxury yachts frequently docking at its port — it has avoided the overdevelopment seen in more popular Greek destinations. Instead, it offers a more refined and authentic experience.

Patmos and Lipsi

Particular emphasis is placed on the island’s gastronomy, with traditional seaside tavernas serving fresh seafood, local cheeses, thyme honey, and distinctive wines that leave a lasting impression on visitors.

Lipsi’s cultural and religious heritage also features prominently, especially the iconic pilgrimage site of Panagia tou Charos, which draws visitors from across Greece.

Mayor Fotis Maggos welcomed the international recognition, describing Lipsi as a model destination that balances growing demand with authenticity and sustainability.

“Lipsi is a destination with increasing interest that continues to preserve its human character. Recognition from a major outlet like The Sun shows that smaller islands can gain global attention by investing in quality and protecting their identity,” he said.

He added that maintaining this balance remains a priority, particularly at a time when global tourism faces ongoing challenges.

The municipality’s recent participation in the ITB international tourism exhibition further confirmed rising demand for lesser-known destinations that align with modern travel trends focused on authenticity, sustainability, and meaningful experiences.
