2 min readWhile everyone’s buzzing over Gwyneth Paltrow’s barely-there Giorgio Armani Privé gown that she wore to the Oscars on Sunday, choice pieces from her enviable fashion collection are about to hit the auction block. And its not just archival clothing and jewelry: For the first time, Julien’s Auctions (which is handling the sell-off) will include home furnishings, art, and decor in one of their semi-annual sales. Amid Christian Dior dresses and Saint Laurent sunglasses are all sorts of covetable design finds, from a 17-piece Roche Bobois sectional to Royère-style Polar Bear chairs and even pieces from the Goop x CB2 collaboration.
“Following her recent move, Gwyneth saw an opportunity to thoughtfully release a selection of her most treasured possessions—objects that have marked distinct moments in her life and evolving sense of style,” says Martin J. Nolan, co-founder and executive director of Julien’s Auctions. “What makes Gwyneth’s edit especially compelling is its diversity—it’s not confined to a single category, but instead offers a holistic view of her life, taste, and evolution.”
The live auction, “Gwyneth Paltrow Lexicon of Style & The Archival Edit,” will take place on March 24 and 25 starting at 10 am PT at the Peninsula Beverly Hills, with collectors online also able to submit bids in real time from wherever they are. Roche Bobois Mah Jong Sofa
Designed to be flexible, functional, and family-friendly, the Mah Jong sofa made its debut in 1971 courtesy of German artist Hans Hopfer, who had just become a new father. Released by Roche Bobois, the modular piece can be configured in a seemingly endlessly variety of ways, with its separate elements resembling the shape of Mah Jong tiles. While newer versions feature eye-catching textiles (the 2024 Missoni collaboration was a standout), Paltrow’s sofa, which once sat in her Hamptons retreat, is clad in an ivory fabric.
Royère-Style Polar Bear Chairs
The virtues of Royère’s “Polar Bear” chairs are no secret—they are among the most coveted pieces of furniture that collectors can own, with rare versions fetching millions. Paltrow’s two chairs are in the Royère style, with no maker’s mark, and feature playful profiles with ultra-plush upholstery. Designer Windsor Smith sourced the seats for the Goop founder’s Brentwood estate.
Vintage Cabinet with Slate Top and Brass Handles
The future is antique, as we recently found out. What better way to embrace imperfection and patina than with a beautifully preserved apothecary cabinet featuring a medley of richly stained wood, brass, and slate? Sourced from Paltrow’s Brentwood home, the late 19th/early 20th century piece not only pulls its weight thanks to 24 drawers, but it looks handsome doing so.
