Without Remorse
Michael B. Jordan tackles Tom Clancy’s world
When it comes to Tom Clancy adaptations, Jack Ryan is the first character that comes to mind. Between the Harrison Ford movies and the John Krasinski TV show, Jack Ryan has received his fair share of attention on the big and small screen. In 2021, another popular character in the Ryanverse, John Kelly, finally got his origin story in Without Remorse.
Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan stars as John Kelly, a Navy SEAL whose wife, Pam (Lauren London), is killed by Russian operatives in retaliation for a previous mission gone wrong. When the CIA fails to investigate his wife’s murder, Kelly goes rogue and brings the fight to the Russians. The CIA quickly realizes that Kelly is a loose cannon who cannot be controlled and won’t stop until he exacts his revenge. As the investigation continues, the lines between good and evil are blurred, and Kelly doesn’t know who to trust.
While Jack Ryan is more of a political thriller, Without Remorse is an old-school action movie where the protagonist will punch, kick, and fight his way out of every situation. Jordan, who proved he could thrive in action with Creed and Black Panther, is believable as a Navy SEAL out for vengeance. Occasionally, the film loses its way when it relies too heavily on the fight scenes, but Jordan’s captivating performance always brings the film back to center.

There Will Be Blood
I want your milkshake
The first time I watched There Will Be Blood, it didn’t fully click. I realized I was seeing greatness onscreen from Daniel Day-Lewis, but I didn’t think it would be a movie I returned to. Then, you watch it again and start to pick out more achievements: Paul Thomas Anderon’s dialogue, Paul Dano’s performance, and Jonny Greenwood’s music. You start to further understand why it’s considered a masterpiece, and trust me, it is a triumph.
At the start of the 20th century, the ruthless Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis) discovers oil in California and spends the next decade accumulating wealth. Daniel adopts a son, H.W. (Russell Harvard), believing that a “family man” image will benefit his business. Daniel’s exploits take him to an untapped oil deposit, where he meets Eli (Paul Dano), a preacher who tries to outmaneuver the oilman.
Whenever the best performances of the 21st century are discussed, Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview has to be one of the first five names mentioned. Day-Lewis is a terrifying monster, one driven by greed and ambition. It’s an American epic that I didn’t know Anderson had in him. The scale of There Will Be Blood certainly paved the way for Anderson’s Oscar-winning thriller, One Battle After Another.

Ad Astra
Daddy issues in space
Leave it to James Gray to sneak themes about the bond between parents and children within a sci-fi space thriller. In the distant future, Major Roy McBride is informed that power surges originating from Neptune might be coming from a mission that involved his father, Clifford (Tommy Lee Jones). Nearly 30 years prior, Clifford captained a mission to search for alien life and never returned.
Believing Clifford could still be alive, McBride agrees to travel to Mars in hopes of establishing contact with his father. The more he investigates, the more McBride realizes that someone is lying about what happened to his father. It all culminates with an all-or-nothing mission to Neptune that will finally give McBride the answers he seeks.
Visually, Ad Astra is a technical masterclass, as space travel has never looked so beautiful. Pitt easily gives one of his best performances of the last decade. He’s a confused son who, no matter how hard he tries, will never give up on his father. It’s a story about our need for a connection, no matter how lonely we feel. And if that doesn’t suit your interest, there are pirates on the moon. It’s awesome.
