EXCLUSIVE: Kirsten Dunst (Roofman) has joined the cast of the untitled Minecraft Movie sequel from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary.
Character details are under wraps. Dunst joins a cast that includes the returning Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge.
The Minecraft movies are based on the popular video franchise from Mojang Studios. While the sequel’s plot is being kept deep in the mine, the first film introduced viewers to four misfits — Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Brooks) — who find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.
To get back home, they must master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Their adventure challenges all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.
A cultural phenomenon, A Minecraft Movie was one of the biggest films of last year, notching a record $163 million domestic opening — the biggest ever for a video game adaptation — and reaching nearly $1 billion worldwide.
Jared Hess is returning to direct the sequel from a script written with Chris Galletta. Producers include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Momoa, and the late Jill Messick. Exec producers are Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy, Brian Mendoza, Jon Berg, and Jonathan Spaihts. Warner Bros. will release the film on July 23, 2027.
Coming off a starring role opposite Channing Tatum in Roofman, Derek Cianfrance’s critically acclaimed true-crime dramedy for Paramount, Dunst’s other recent credits include Alex Garland’s A24 pic Civil War, as well as Jane Campion’s Netflix Western The Power of the Dog, for which she landed her first Academy Award nomination, in the category of Best Supporting Actress.
Other upcoming projects for the actress include Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down, Alejandro Landes Echavarría’s Reptilia with Mikey Madison, as well as Flora Birnbaum’s debut feature Self Help, produced by Jessica Elbaum and Will Ferrell.
