Fashion Magazine for Dogs Being Sued by ‘Vogue’ Publisher and Pup Lovers Are Calling for Justice

I will always be the first to admit that anything that’s done based on humans would only be made 100% better if it focused on dogs instead. For the proof, you have to look no further than the Puppy Bowl. It’s a lot more adorable (and less stressful) to root for your favorite puppies running around their own football field than watching the actual Super Bowl.

This is also true of fashion magazines, including Dogue, the tongue-in-cheek, dog-themed version of cultural mainstay Vogue that features stylish canines instead of humans. There’s just one problem: The magazine is being sued for copying the original. Yikes!

According to this report that CBS’ Evening News shared on the outlet’s official TikTok, Condé Nast (the media company that owns Vogue) is coming out swinging against Dogue, the unaffiliated magazine about dogs, because they’re concerned that the names being so similar could cause consumer confusion.

Then, there’s also the fact that Vogue occasionally releases special edition issues focused on celebrity dogs that they call Dogue, so that might be the final nail in the coffin for the newer dog-centric mag.

This seems to be a case of the big fish going after the small fish, because Dogue‘s total circulation is under 100 — who is getting the two magazines confused with such a small readership? However, it doesn’t sound like Dogue‘s editor in chief, Olga Portnaya, is willing to go down without a fight.

“Art and culture have always evolved through reinterpretation and dialogue,” she told the New York Times. “For me, this is a larger fight: I’m not just fighting for my own work and our community, but for other independent creators.”

People Have Strong Feelings About the Vogue/Dogue Lawsuit

The comments of CBS’ TikTok video about the lawsuit made it clear that most people are taking Dogue‘s side on this one. While some people can see how Vogue has a case to be made here, others are just glad that a dog-related version of a fashion magazine actually exists in the first place.

“The real question is… how can I subscribe to DOGUE?!” one commenter wrote.

Another chimed in, “Vogue is just jealous that Dogue has better models.” (Probably true.)

Good luck to Dogue in this battle. It sounds like they have a lot of support behind them, if nothing else.
