What do Missourians think of the job performances of President Trump, Congress, and other officeholders?
Steve Rogers is a political science professor at St. Louis University and directs the SLU/YouGov Poll. He told KMOX Radio that the number of Missourians that “strongly support” the president is declining.
“So for example, Donald Trump’s strong approval numbers are actually down about 12%,” he said. “Those ‘strong’ approvers seem to be largely shifting over into the ‘approval’ category, meaning that maybe some of Trump’s supporters are softening a little bit on his support.”
When it comes to Congress, their approval ratings largely depend on which political party those surveyed favor.
“Republicans overall are favorable towards the U.S. Congress right now by 54% to 40%,” Rogers said. “And then additionally, we can see amongst Democrats, only 7% of Democrats approve of Congress and 89% disapprove.”
As for the U.S. Supreme Court, 47% of Missouri’s likely voters approved of the job it’s doing, while 46% disapprove.
What do Missourians want state lawmakers to embrace as their top priority? As the old saying goes, “It’s the economy, stupid.”
“We asked about the economy, healthcare, education, and infrastructure,” Rogers said. “And in this, 47% of Missouri likely voters thought the economy should be the top priority, followed by only 21% for healthcare.”
Education came in third at 12%, infrastructure at 11%, and “other” at 10 percent.
Other results from the SLU/YouGov poll:
Gov. Mike Kehoe’s favorable rating comes in at 47%, with an unfavorable rating of 42%
U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley’s rating is 50% favorable and 43% unfavorable
