According to the Kansas City Star, the star guard, who was widely expected to be the top pick of the 2026 NBA Draft, has opened up about a traumatic full-body cramp, which he said hospitalized him.

The star prospect further elaborated that the event changed his approach to basketball, which led to him subbing himself out of games and adopting a more cautious mindset in regard to his health.

Peterson and fourth-seeded Kansas face No. 13 seed California Baptist on Friday in the first round of the NCAA tournament, and it presents an opportunity for the hyped prospect to push his stock to the next level … or once again face more questions.

In the same article, it’s speculated NBA teams are now far more concerned about Peterson being the No. 1 overall pick, with AJ Dybantsa, a 6-foot-9 forward out of BYU, now considered the more safe choice.

It’s the correct approach by NBA teams if they all move Dybantsa to the top of their draft boards.
Not only is this a deep draft, but it’s one that could produce superstars, and you just don’t want to put yourself in a situation where you risk not getting full bang for your buck with the top pick.

That’s not to say Peterson shouldn’t have our full sympathy and consideration here. The 6-6 guard is nothing short of an immense talent, and one who does indeed have superstar upside. Injuries are outside of his control, which makes all of this enormously rough for a 19-year-old who is just trying to find his own way.

That said, the NBA is a business, and one where teams have to put themselves in the best possible position to win, be that for the present or five years down the line.
Could Peterson still justify being the top pick? If injuries don’t follow him throughout his NBA career then absolutely. But that’s a fairly big risk given what’s transpired so far.
The Kansas City Star piece highlighted additional concerns about Peterson’s athleticism, which has allegedly diminished since his high school days, according to scouts.
Teams will obviously have to evaluate that for themselves, as the opinion of a few scouts can’t possibly speak on behalf of 30 teams. That said, it’s a worrying element, which only makes it that much more crucial that teams do their homework before entering the draft.

Frankly, this development could see the multifaceted guard slip. It’s not likely that he slips a lot, given that some team in the top five will undoubtedly find him too intriguing to resist, even with his new list of concerns.
One way Peterson can calm teams is during individual workouts, where they can get a chance to see him up close, run him through some tests and speak with him directly about his freshman season.
Most top prospects work out against a team’s coaching staff and not against other prospects. That, too, could be a way for Peterson to prove himself, by inviting competition and showing teams his competitive fire.

It’s not a great situation for Peterson to find himself in only three months out from the draft.
However, the young man deserves credit for finally speaking with the media and stating his case. Clarifying his situation, instead of continuing his media blackout, has now provided teams, fans and analysts with a better idea of what’s going on. That beats speculation every single day of the week.
This gives teams information and an avenue for how to approach Peterson, should they have interest in him.
For teams that are now less interested in Peterson, that too is fair enough. After all, getting high picks right is so utterly crucial, especially as the NBA is bound to make changes to the lottery, leaving rebuilding franchises in a tough situation since building through the draft might no longer be a viable option.

As such, getting the pick right in this draft will be even more important.
Overall, this is a tough situation for both Peterson and NBA teams. But at least this news didn’t drop on the week of the draft, which should give everyone a chance to collect themselves and identify the best path forward.
