The Greek Island of Samos has opened its tourism season on a positive note, as the arrival of the first Turkish visitors from Kusadasi marked the launch of regular ferry routes linking the two sides of the Aegean. The early influx is viewed as a promising signal, with local authorities and business owners expressing optimism for increased tourist flows.
Turkish Visitor Numbers Reached a New High in 2025
According to data released by the Hellenic Coast Guard, Turkish tourist arrivals to the port of Vathy in Samos from Kusadasi and Sigacik exceeded 100,000 in 2025.
The annual total reached 100,226 visitors, marking a notable increase from 2024, which had already delivered record numbers compared with earlier years. The figures highlight the growing importance of the Turkish market to the local tourism economy, particularly during the peak summer season.
Monthly data show how traffic built over the course of the summer. In June 2025, 13,293 passengers arrived at the port. Arrivals then rose sharply to 26,358 in July and 32,443 in August, before easing to 15,631 in September. Even with the seasonal slowdown at the end of summer, the yearly performance remained exceptionally strong.
Ferry connections continue to drive traffic
The start of the new ferry season is central to the island’s tourism outlook. Regular services linking Samos with Kusadasi and Sigacik offer Turkish travelers a convenient route to the island and have become an important channel for visitor growth.
For Samos, these connections are not simply transport links. They support hotels, restaurants, shops and tourism-related businesses, while also strengthening the island’s visibility among travelers looking for short breaks across the Aegean.
The arrival of 265 passengers at the opening of the season may be modest compared with peak summer volumes, but it carries symbolic and commercial significance. It suggests that demand remains active at the start of the year and gives local stakeholders reason to expect another solid season.
Visa facilitation helped sustain Turkish travel to Greece’s Samos
A key factor behind the rise in Turkish arrivals has been the continuation of the visa express scheme for Turkish citizens traveling to selected Greek islands.
Following action by the Greek Foreign Ministry, the European Commission approved a one-year extension of the short-stay visa program beginning on April 1, 2025. The renewal was widely seen as an important step in supporting cross-border tourism and making travel easier for Turkish visitors.
The scheme covers Kalymnos, Kastellorizo, Kos, Lesvos, Leros, Limnos, Rhodes, Samos, Symi and Chios. In 2025, it was also extended to Patmos and Samothrace, bringing the number of participating islands to 12.
