Big Brothers Big Sisters partners with firefighters for mentorship event

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Big Brothers Big Sisters teamed up with local firefighters at the Science Spectrum Museum, giving the kids a chance to connect, learn and grow.

Through Big Brothers Big Sisters, kids known as “littles” were paired up with their “bigs” for a day of exploration and connection. From interactive exhibits to hands-on activities, moments like these give kids the opportunity to just be kids with the men and women they may call their hero.

“We have been doing football, we have been doing that and we went over here and tried to do the thing but it was not working, so we tried it again and it worked,” one child said.

Melissa Corley, executive director for Big Brothers Big Sisters, said the focus was not just science but relationships.

“Mentorship is so important for our kids, it’s really important just for anybody to have someone to look up to, have that guidance and that friendship,” Corley said. “So it’s really important that we have mentors not just as kids but as adults to so we are really excited about the work we do and we are excited that they have those mentors here today.”

Joseph Wallace with Lubbock Fire Rescue said this event is about building trust and showing kids they are here to protect and support them on and off the job.

“It’s always good for children no matter where they come from to have a positive influence in their life, and these recruits and Lubbock firefighters are always a good influence and a presence to be around, they help try to teach good morals, ethics, good behavior as well as giving back to the community,” Wallace said.

One “little” thanked the fire department for showing up and helping give them a day where they can just be kids.

“My experience guys would actually, to the whole world, I would say thank you for actually watching us, come here, and listen to us having our voice,” the child said.

Corley says there is always a need for Big Brothers and Big Sisters. She says your time as a Big Brother or Sister, even if its only once a week, makes a bigger impact on these kids lives than you may think.
