Todd Baughman, Ph.D., director of the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Lubbock, received the Southern Weed Science Society Outstanding Educator Award.

The award recognizes a broad range of activities, including formal classroom teaching, outreach, extension, public service, seminars, short courses, undergraduate and graduate mentoring, and publication of scholarly works.
Baughman received the award during a ceremony at the society’s annual meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, in March.
“I’m honored to have received this award,” he said. “It not only recognizes my work, but the important impacts of the research-based education that Texas A&M AgriLife delivers through world-class extension programming.”
A career of education impacts
Baughman was recognized for an extensive body of scholarly works including authoring or co-authoring 50 journal articles, 251 abstracts, 144 technical articles, 110 press releases and five plant material releases. He has chaired or participated in 19 graduate student committees.
“An active member of the Southern Weed Science Society since 1990, Dr. Baughman distinguished himself early as a student competitor in paper and poster contests,” according to the biography accompanying his award. “His leadership within SWSS includes service as member at large, secretary treasurer and the society’s president in 2024–2025.”
Baughman has served as reviewer and associate editor of the journal Weed Science and currently contributes to the Weed Science Society of America through its committees on finance and science policy. He also is a WSSA-National Institute of Food and Agriculture, NIFA, Fellow. His leadership extends to the American Peanut Research and Education Society, where he also served as president and was honored as a fellow.
