The Educational Service Center of the Western Reserve has been awarded $584,614 through the Ohio Teach Computer Science 2.0 State Grant, a competitive initiative funded by the Ohio Department of Higher Education.
As part of an $8 million investment, the grants aim to prepare teachers to meet state requirements for computer science education by 2028.
According to officials, the grant expands access to high-quality computer science education by increasing the number of licensed computer science educators serving Ohio schools.
The funding supports Ohio’s Computer Science Promise by removing financial barriers for educators seeking additional licensure.
Ohio educators participating in the 2026-2027 Teach CS Grant Program are eligible for stipends of at least $500.
Through the initiative, ESCWR will provide:
• Tuition support for 75 educators pursuing a K–12 computer science endorsement
• Licensure exam preparation support and targeted tutoring
• Educator stipends upon program completion
• Expanded student access to advanced computer science coursework across participating districts
“By removing financial barriers for teachers and supporting additional licensure to have more options in one’s career, we are building sustainable computer science pathways that prepare Ohio students for the workforce, citizenship and economic prosperity,” said Betty Jo Malchesky, ESCWR director of grants management and operations.
Superintendent Jennifer Felker added, “Computer science is no longer optional for future readiness — it’s essential.
“This investment allows us to support districts across Ohio with high-quality instruction, strong university partnerships and innovative shared-service models that ensure every student has access, regardless of location.”
The grant runs through June 2027 and includes partnerships with K–12 districts, the University of Akron, Lake Erie College, Kent State University and statewide workforce and education organizations.
Ohio educators interested in pursuing a K–12 computer science endorsement are encouraged to apply.
