The NBA has rescinded Luka Dončić’s 16th technical foul of the season, allowing the Los Angeles Lakers star to avoid a one-game suspension and remain available for Monday’s road game against the Detroit Pistons.
The decision came after the Lakers formally appealed the technical assessed during Saturday’s 105-104 win over the Orlando Magic.
Dončić had been facing an automatic suspension after reaching the league’s 16-technical threshold, but the successful appeal removes the immediate consequence. His next technical foul will now trigger a one-game suspension.
Technical Stemmed From Heated Exchange
The technical was issued with 1:19 remaining in the third quarter after Dončić and Magic center Goga Bitadze exchanged words while Dončić was at the free-throw line.
Referee Marat Kogut assessed a double technical after determining both players had engaged in unsportsmanlike conduct. According to crew chief Marc Davis, the players had been warned before the technicals.
“Dončić and Bitadze were both assessed technical fouls for their continual taunting of one another,” Davis said in a pool report. “They were both warned to cease their comments… and were correctly assessed technical fouls.”
The sequence quickly became a focal point after the game, prompting the Lakers to challenge the ruling.
Conflicting Accounts of On-Court Exchange
Dončić and Bitadze offered differing accounts of what was said during the exchange.
Dončić acknowledged his involvement but suggested the comments directed toward him crossed a line.
“I’m definitely hoping [it is rescinded],” Dončić said after the game. “Obviously, I let my team down getting that last tech. But honestly, I wasn’t trying to… At some point, I just can’t stand it. I got to stand up for myself.”
Bitadze, however, disputed Dončić’s version, telling ESPN he simply responded to what was first said to him.
“I have all the respect for Luka and what he has done,” Bitadze said. “He said something… and I just said it back. It was nothing toward his family or anybody.”
The conflicting accounts underscored the difficulty officials face in policing verbal exchanges during high-intensity moments.
Lakers Appeal Proves Successful
The Lakers quickly filed an appeal following the game, according to ESPN, arguing that officials should have issued a stronger warning before escalating to technical fouls.
The NBA ultimately agreed, rescinding Dončić’s technical and removing the immediate suspension.
The decision marks another instance in which Dončić has had a 16th technical foul overturned, as similar situations occurred earlier in his career with the Dallas Mavericks.
Dončić Continues Dominant Stretch
Despite the controversy, Dončić delivered another standout performance.
He finished with 33 points and eight assists in the win, helping the Lakers extend their winning streak to nine games.
The All-Star guard has now scored at least 30 points in nine consecutive games, averaging 40.0 points, 8.4 rebounds and 7.4 assists over that span while playing heavy minutes.
Even with a difficult second half — shooting 2-for-13 from the field and 0-for-7 from beyond the arc — Dončić’s overall production continues to drive the Lakers’ surge in the Western Conference standings with their ninth straight win.
Suspension Avoided, But Pressure Remains
While the rescinded technical provides immediate relief, Dončić remains one technical foul away from triggering a suspension.
That reality places added emphasis on maintaining composure as the Lakers continue their push toward the postseason.
For now, Los Angeles avoids a significant setback and retains its leading scorer for a key road matchup in Detroit, but the margin for error moving forward remains slim as the regular season enters its final stretch.
