Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick looks down on the floor.
The Los Angeles Lakers will be without two key rotation players Monday night as they visit the Detroit Pistons in a marquee late-season matchup, with Rui Hachimura and Marcus Smart both officially ruled out.
Hachimura will sit out due to right calf soreness, marking his first absence since Feb. 28, while Smart was unable to clear his questionable tag because of ankle soreness. The injuries leave the Lakers shorthanded on both the wing and in the backcourt as they look to extend one of the NBA’s hottest streaks.
Rotation Adjustments Begin With Hachimura, Smart Absences

GettyLos Angeles Lakers guard Marcus Smart gestures a three with his fingers as Los Angeles Lakers forward Rui Hachimura sinks a three point shot over Philadelphia 76ers center Adem Bona.
Hachimura has been a reliable contributor this season, averaging 11.1 points and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 43.8% from 3-point range. Though he lost his starting role earlier in the year, the forward has embraced a bench role, providing scoring punch and spacing for the second unit.
Across 24 games off the bench, Hachimura has averaged 8.6 points in 23.3 minutes, offering steady production in a reduced role.
Smart’s absence presents a different challenge.
The veteran guard is averaging 9.5 points, 2.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals while leading the Lakers in cumulative plus/minus at +238 — a reflection of his two-way impact and ability to stabilize lineups.
Without him, Los Angeles loses a key perimeter defender and playmaker, placing additional pressure on its backcourt depth.
Luke Kennard and Jake LaRavia are expected to see increased minutes as the Lakers adjust their rotation.
Kennard Emerging as Key Contributor
Kennard has already proven capable of stepping into a larger role.
He delivered in a defining moment during the Lakers’ previous outing, drilling a go-ahead 3-pointer with less than a second remaining to lift Los Angeles to a 105-104 victory over the Orlando Magic.
The shot capped a late comeback and extended the Lakers’ winning streak to nine games — the second-longest active streak in the NBA — while also giving them a 2.5-game cushion for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.
Los Angeles has thrived in high-pressure situations this season, improving to 22-6 in clutch-time games, a mark that underscores its late-game execution.
Pistons Adjusting Without Cade Cunningham
The Pistons enter the matchup dealing with their own absence.
Cade Cunningham, the team’s franchise cornerstone, was recently diagnosed with a collapsed lung and remains sidelined.
Detroit has responded with two straight wins without Cunningham, defeating the Washington Wizards and a Golden State Warriors squad missing Stephen Curry.
However, those victories came against struggling opponents, leaving questions about how the Pistons will fare against a surging Lakers team.
High-Stakes Test for Both Teams
For the Lakers, the game represents an opportunity to maintain momentum and strengthen their playoff positioning despite key injuries.
For the Pistons, it offers a chance to prove their recent success can carry over against one of the Western Conference’s hottest teams.
Final Outlook
Even without Hachimura and Smart, the Lakers enter Monday’s matchup with confidence, fueled by strong depth, efficient offense and clutch execution.
Still, their absences create a test of adaptability.
How Los Angeles responds — and whether role players like Kennard can continue to deliver — could determine whether the team extends its winning streak or faces a late-season setback.
