Daytona Beach experienced chaos over the weekend as thousands of spring breakers were sent running amidst panic.
Officials said that the unrest stemmed from a large gathering, organized via social media, which drew a crowd of up to 10,000 people for a “beach takeover” event.
Panic ensued when attendees allegedly mistakenly believed they heard gunshots; however, it was later revealed that the sounds were actually from someone crushing water bottles to create noise.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood confirmed that no gunfire occurred on the beach, stating, “There were zero gunshots on the beach,” while explaining the confusion that led to the chaos.
This incident highlighted the broader challenges Daytona Beach faces during spring break. Over the same weekend, law enforcement reported responding to multiple shootings and making over 130 arrests.
