Evan Mobley and Jazzy Davidson had star-level weeks. Davidson led the USC Trojans into Round 2 of the NCAA Tournament. Mobley has the Cavs playing their best ball of the season. Both players are trying to take their careers to new heights. Davidson already did that in the tournament, and Mobley aims to be a difference-maker for the Cavs to go on a run and win a title.
Here are my top performers this past week for USC hoopers, both in college and the NBA:
Women’s Basketball – Jazzy Davidson
In her debut in the NCAA tournament, Jazzy Davidson was nothing short of a star. Davidson had 31 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Davidson was also clutch in the biggest moments, draining back-to-back 3s in overtime to help her team get out of round 1. It is performances like this that get you excited for what a Jazzy Davidson and Juju Watkins duo will be like next season.
Women’s Basketball – Kara Dunn
Jazzy Davidson was not the only guard who had a good night. Senior Kara Dunn was the perfect complement to Davidson’s electric night. Dunn had 22 points and 4 rebounds on the night. This was a big night for the senior as she showed out in a big way in potentially one of her last collegiate games. Her and Jazzy will both have to have similar games to have a shot at South Carolina.
NBA – De’Anthony Melton
Still no Steph Curry for the Warriors, but in his place, De’Anthony Melton has provided a nice scoring boost for his squad. Melton, in his last performance, had a team-high 20 points and 4 assists. In last week’s Monday game, Melton was elite as he dropped 27 points, had 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Melton is as valuable a rotation piece as it gets. On nights where the Warriors are without their star, Melton can provide his team with the exact performance they need in Curry’s absence
NBA – Kevin Porter Jr.
Kevin Porter Jr. only played one game this past week, but in that game, he shone. Porter Jr. had 25 points and 10 assists vs the Cavs in a close loss. Porter Jr. has been banged up a lot this season, but when he has been on the court, more often than not, he has delivered. It was not just an offensive game, but also a game in which Porter Jr. had 2 blocks as well. Through this season of opportunity, Porter Jr. has become more of an all-around player, but he has also shown he can score at a high level with his 17.4 points per game average.
NBA – Evan Mobley
Evan Mobley was one of the more dominant Trojans this past week, and for him, that has been the case in the last 5 games. He is playing confidently, and it looks like he is very comfortable in his connection with James Harden. Prior to the most recent game last week on Saturday, Mobley had two straight dominant showings. On Tuesday, Mobley had 27 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks vs the Bucks in a win. He followed that up with 26 points, 14 rebounds, and 3 assists. That is the type of Evan Mobley the Cavs need to win the East. On Saturday, Evan Mobley only missed 2 shots and scored 18 points, had 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks. In that game, Donovan Mitchell returned, but that still didn’t get in the way of an efficient night by Mobley. He is heating up right at the perfect time.
