Greece achieved the second-largest reduction in road deaths (22%) in 2025, according to European Commission road safety data released on Tuesday.
At the same time, the European average recorded a decrease of 3%, with Greece posting one of the best performances, second only to Estonia. This development confirms progress recorded in 2025 – a year in which the country achieved the largest reduction in road fatalities in its history, with a still-high figure of 517 deaths compared to 665 in 2024, a decrease of 22%. This figure is also the lowest recorded in the country since 1963.
This noteworthy reduction is the result of a stricter traffic code, stepped up police checks, the greater use of hi-tech detection and digital monitoring systems and even targeted measures, such as DUI roadblocks in major urban areas. Delivery of a section of the Patras–Pyrgos motorway in southwest Greece was also cited.
