Rui Hachimura #28 of the Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers received a potential boost ahead of the final stop of their road trip, upgrading forward Rui Hachimura to questionable in the official NBA injury report for Wednesday’s game against the Indiana Pacers.
Hachimura missed Monday’s 113-110 loss to the Detroit Pistons due to right calf soreness, an absence that coincided with the end of the Lakers’ nine-game winning streak.
Coach JJ Redick provided an encouraging update before that game, indicating the injury is not expected to be serious.
“Rui, I guess, got hit at some point in the Miami game, his calf, and so it tightened up on him in the Orlando game,” Redick said. “Imaging was clean, so he’s just kind of day to day.”
Lakers Injury Updates Affect Rotation Depth
Hachimura was not the only Lakers player sidelined.
Veteran guard Marcus Smart also missed Monday’s game with a right ankle contusion and hip tightness, leaving Los Angeles without two key rotation contributors.
“And then Smart, when Goga (Bitadze) fell on his leg, he got like a bruised ankle,” Redick said. “He’s probably in the same boat day to day.”
With Smart considered doubtful for Wednesday’s contest, Hachimura’s potential return would provide a timely boost to the Lakers’ depth, particularly on the wing.
Slow Start Proves Costly in Detroit
Without Hachimura and Smart, the Lakers struggled early in Detroit.
LeBron James was held scoreless in the first half, marking just the third time in his career he entered halftime without a point, according to ESPN Stats & Info — and his first since 2010.
James finished the opening half 0-of-5 from the field with six assists and four rebounds while posting a minus-14 rating. He did not record his first field goal until midway through the third quarter.
The Lakers trailed 65-52 before mounting a second-half comeback, briefly taking a 108-107 lead after free throws from Deandre Ayton.
Dončić, Reaves Lead Lakers’ Comeback Effort
Luka Dončić continued his scoring surge despite legal troubles and led Los Angeles with 32 points, while Austin Reaves added 24 in the loss.
However, the Pistons closed strong behind a standout performance from Daniss Jenkins, who scored a career-high 30 points, including six in the final 34 seconds.
Jalen Duren contributed 20 points and 10 rebounds as Detroit extended its winning streak to four games.
Hachimura’s Role Key to Offensive Balance
If cleared to return, Hachimura would provide the Lakers with a valuable floor-spacing option.
The 6-foot-8 forward is averaging 11.1 points and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 43.8% from three-point range, making him one of the team’s most efficient perimeter threats.
His shooting is particularly important in lineups featuring Dončić, James and Reaves — all of whom draw defensive attention and benefit from reliable catch-and-shoot options.
Hachimura’s role has fluctuated between starter and reserve this season, especially as Smart has carved out minutes for his defensive impact.
In a bench role, Hachimura has embraced a scoring-focused identity, averaging 8.6 points in 23.3 minutes across 24 games as a reserve.
Road Trip Finale Against Pacers
The Lakers will look to bounce back against a Pacers team that has already been eliminated from postseason contention but is coming off a 128-126 win over the Orlando Magic behind Pascal Siakam’s 37 points.
That victory snapped a 16-game losing streak for Indiana, giving them momentum heading into Wednesday’s matchup.
For Los Angeles, the focus will be on regaining rhythm — and potentially reintegrating Hachimura — as they aim to close out their road trip on a positive note and maintain their two-game cushion over the Denver Nuggets for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.
