Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has issued an official message marking Greek Independence Day 2026, honoring both Greece’s historic struggle for sovereignty and the foundational role the Greek diaspora plays in modern Australia.
Albanese honors a “Great nation born in freedom”
Reflecting on the historical weight of March 25, the Prime Minister described the date as a global moment to “celebrate a great nation born in freedom.”
He paid tribute to the revolutionaries of 1821, noting that the day serves to honor those who fought for liberty during the Greek War of Independence.
Albanese emphasized that the anniversary resonates far beyond the borders of the Hellenic Republic.
“This is a day of celebration for our Hellenic sisters and brothers worldwide,” he stated, adding that for the broader Australian public, it represents “an opportunity for all Australians to take joy in our profound connection with Greece.”
The integral role of the Diaspora
A central theme of the Prime Minister’s address was the success and influence of the Greek-Australian community, one of the largest in the world. He specifically highlighted the transformative impact of those who arrived in the mid-20th century.
“The immigrants who arrived in the post-war years gave Australia one of the world’s largest Greek diasporas… and as they thrived here beneath the southern sky they became integral to the story of our modern nation,” Albanese remarked.
He expressed gratitude for the community’s “energy, aspiration and hard work,” praising their ability to remain deeply connected to their ancestral heritage while being fully committed to their lives in Australia.
A lasting bilateral bond
The message underscored the “enduring relationship” between the two nations, rooted in shared democratic principles and a long history of migration. In his closing remarks, the Prime Minister reaffirmed that the Greek community’s influence is a permanent and cherished part of the Australian identity.
“Just as you celebrate your day of independence, Australia will always celebrate your ongoing contribution to our great nation,” Albanese concluded, ending his message with the traditional salute: “Zito i Ellas!”
