“Spider-Man” fans in Mississippi will see a familiar face when the latest flick in the Marvel franchise is released this summer.
Jackson State University alumnus Tramell Tillman will appear in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” set to drop in theaters nationwide July 31. Tillman’s alma mater issued a press release commending him on the latest step in his career.
“Tramell Tillman reflects the excellence we cultivate at Jackson State,” JSU Interim President Denise Jones Gregory said. “We are incredibly proud to see one of our own step into a role of this scale, continuing his work to a global audience.”
Tillman will play William “Bill” Metzger in the upcoming “Spider-Man” movie. Metzger is the director of the U.S. Department of Damage Control, and while he’s appeared in the comics, this will be his first time being portrayed on the screen. According to Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki, Metzger is a prominent anti-mutant activist.
The role follows Tillman’s first Emmy Award, which came last September for his work in the Apple TV series “Severance.” Tillman won the honor for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series, making him the first Black man to win it.
A 2008 graduate of Jackson State, Tillman was a member of the HBCU’s MADDRAMA Performance Troupe, which provides hands-on training in student performance and production, and has often shouted out his alma mater – especially when working to nail a marching band scene at the end of “Severance” season two.
“From his time with MADDRAMA to this moment on the big screen, his journey demonstrates what is possible when talent is paired with the training he received here and the opportunity to grow as an artist,” Jones Gregory continued.
“Tramell’s time with MADDRAMA showcased his talent, discipline, and commitment to ensemble storytelling,” MADDRAMA founder Dr. Mark Henderson said. “His achievements inspire current students and validate our program’s ability to prepare artists for the highest levels of performance.”
For “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” Tillman joins a star-studded cast highlighted by Tom Holland’s continued Spidey role as Peter Parker. Zendaya is back as MJ. Others involved include Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo.
