“We are inspired by the determination of the Greek people” Greek City Times

The White House has issued an official proclamation for March 25, with US President Donald Trump declaring the occasion as the “National Day of Celebration of Greek and American Democracy.”

In the proclamation, Trump highlights the deep historical and ideological ties between the Greek War of Independence in 1821 and the American Revolution of 1776, emphasizing the shared democratic foundations of both nations.

“Together, our two countries are allies in freedom, united by history, tested by struggle, and confident in the promise of a bright future,” the President stated.

Honouring Greece’s struggle for freedom

The proclamation pays tribute to the Greek people’s fight for independence, praising their courage and resilience in overthrowing centuries of foreign rule.

It describes how Greeks “shook off the shackles of despotic rule,” reignited the ideals of freedom first born in ancient Greece, and reaffirmed the nation’s legacy as the cradle of Western civilization.

Trump also underlined that Greece and the United States remain aligned in their commitment to democratic values, peace, and the defence of shared ideals on the global stage.

A shared democratic legacy

Drawing parallels between the two nations, the proclamation notes that long before America’s founding nearly 250 years ago, the principles of self-governance emerged in ancient Greece, where citizens first had a direct voice in shaping their political destiny.

It highlights how this democratic spirit endured through centuries of hardship and ultimately fueled the Greek Revolution of 1821 — a struggle marked by sacrifice and an unwavering belief in self-determination.

Similarly, the United States was founded on the principles of liberty and democratic governance, with both nations sharing a belief in fundamental rights such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

The proclamation also acknowledges the enduring contribution of the Greek-American community, noting its impact on US society through entrepreneurship, faith, and dedication to democratic principles.

According to Trump, Greek-Americans continue to play a vital role in strengthening the cultural and civic fabric of the United States.

A message of unity and inspiration

As the United States approaches 250 years of independence, the President said Americans continue to draw inspiration from Greece’s enduring fight for freedom.

He concluded by reaffirming the strong bond between the two nations, celebrating a shared legacy rooted in democracy, resilience, and a commitment to liberty.

“On this anniversary of Greek Independence, we celebrate that indomitable spirit… which inspired our Founding Fathers and continues to inspire people on both sides of the Atlantic.”
