Dexter Boney, who graduated as Delaware’s all-time high school basketball leading scorer, will join 11 others in the Delaware Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026.
Boney scored 2,358 points for Brandywine, the most for any Delaware high school boys basketball player until Tatnall’s Jawan Carter eclipsed the mark in 2006.
He was Delaware’s first 3-time First Team All-State Boys Basketball player.
Boney went on to UNLV, where he was First Team all-Big West in 1993, averaging 15.1 points per game. He was voted the 61st best UNLV player in a 2010 Las Vegas Review Journal list, and among Delaware’s 50 greatest sports figures by Sports Illustrated in 2003.
Professionally, Boney played for 10 seasons, including eight games for the 1997 Phoenix Suns.
Boney will be honored at the 27th Delaware Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame Banquet on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 6 p.m. at the Modern Maturity Center at 1121 Forest Avenue in Dover.

Joining Boney on April 18 will be:
- Marvin Bell – P.S. duPont’s final First Team All-Stater led them to the 1971 basketball state championship game, averaging 20.6 points per game. Was a member of the 1971 Division 2 Cross Country State Championship team.
- William “Herky” Billings” – Member of the University of Delaware 1972 Championship Football Team. Went on to coach at several Delaware high schools, along with Delaware State when future Super Bowl winning receiver John Taylor was on the Hornets.
- Karen Burroughs – Played softball at Caesar Rodney before going on to join the US Marine Corps, where she was All Marine Player of the Year in softball. She became an instructor of Military Occupational Specialty at bases in North Carolina and Virginia.
- John Isreal Ingram – Played football, basketball, baseball, and ran track for Georgetown High School from 1968-1969, and played two years at Delaware State College.
- Michael Ingram – Set the boys pentathlon record representing Milford, a record held by Billy “White Shoes” Johnson. Finished second in the Junior Olympic Decathlon regionals. Went on to break the University of Delaware records in the high jump and long jump.
- Robin Johnson – Led Delaware high school girls basketball in scoring in 1975-76 and 76-77, the first two years The News Journal kept records. Averaged 23 points per game for P.S. duPont, and at age 36 earned a tryout for the New York Liberty of the WNBA.
- Donna Polk – The first female and African American Executive Director of the DIAA also was head basketball coach at Bowie State from 2008-2011. She earned 10 varsity letters between field hockey, basketball, and softball. She scored over 1,000 career points in college basketball.
- James Patrick “Thunder” Thornton – During the 1981 Delaware State College football season, the defensive end had 19 tackles in one game, 11 sacks (4 in one game), and 5 fumble recoveries. He earned tryouts with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL and Toronto Argonauts of the CFL.
- Arthur “Art” Turner Sr. – Won the 100, 200, and 440-yard dashes at the 1969 State and New Castle County track meets for Wilmington High School, whose relay team won the mile relay gold.
- Dr. Garcia “Gus” Walker – 1977 state champion in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles, and set the current Milford school record in the 200-meter despite a dirt track. Competed at Salisbury State and Delaware State.
- Bradford “Brad” Waples – The 1971 Delaware 440-yard champion for Cape Henlopen helped lead Cape Henlopen to back-to-back track titles. Won the Mid-Atlantics and was part of a Penn Relays mile-relay team for UMES.
- 1980-1981 Indian River Boys Basketball Team – The Indians won back-to-back state championships with Charles Rayne being named 1st Team All-State in his junior and senior years averaging 18 points and 14 rebounds per game.
