In recognition of International Women in Music Day (March 28) and Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating the huge contribution of countless women artists in a special International Women in Music Weekend.
Starting this Friday at noon, and running all day Saturday and Sunday, we are celebrating the ways women have shaped and changed music all over the world, both in front of and behind the microphone.
You’ll hear musical pioneers spanning decades and genres, from Bessie Smith and Maybelle Carter to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Dolly Parton, and Nina Simone.
Yes you’ll hear rock, blues, folk, and soul heroes like Tina Turner, Kim Deal, Aretha Franklin, St. Vincent, Joan Jett, Brittany Howard, Joni Mitchell, Rhiannon Giddens, and Patti Smith.
But the music special also includes recent recordings from up-and-coming artists who have been making a big impact, such as Waxahatchee, Courtney Barnett, Allison Russell, Katie Pruett, Alysia Kraft, and Silvana Estrada.
And then there are plenty more women in music who are a bit more ‘behind the scenes’ – either key band members or instrumentalists, producers, songwriters, or music executives.
