The Culture Ministry is establishing two accessible underwater archaeological sites in the Fourni archipelago in the northern Aegean, at Akra Fygou and Vathylakas.
Regulations are being prepared to govern safety, protection of antiquities and recreational diving.
Systematic underwater research since 2014 has documented 62 shipwrecks dating from the 6th century BC to the interwar period, highlighting the area’s long maritime significance.
The sites will feature designated dive routes and controlled access.
Officials say the initiative aims to protect underwater heritage while promoting sustainable development and diving tourism, showcasing a dense concentration of wrecks spanning Archaic to Roman and later periods.
