The Warriors have nine games remaining in the regular season and at least one NBA play-in game before this season ends.
And for veteran guard De’Anthony Melton, that could potentially be the final time he wears a Warriors uniform.
The 27-year-old, who turns 28 in May, has a player option on his contract, and after posting a career-high 13.0 points in just under 23 minutes of play per game, it wouldn’t seem like much of a surprise.
Melton spoke with 95.7’s “Steiny and Guru” on Thursday afternoon and discussed the potential offseason decision.
“I’ve been in this league a decent amount of time,” Melton said. “So, eight years is a lot of time. I’ve put in a lot of time and effort and work into this. I think that should be rewarded and I think, for anybody, you put in that much time, effort, work and you’ve seen the results and you’ve seen how impactful you are and what you have done, like I said, you want to be rewarded for that. So, whatever comes with it, comes with it, but end of the day you want to get rewarded for your services.”
Melton hasn’t found his 3-point shot this season, as he’s put up just a 28.8 percent mark from long range, but he has led the team in steals per game with 1.6 in addition to his consistent scoring.
After being traded to the Brooklyn Nets from the Warriors last season while he was injured, Melton found his way back to Golden State with a two-year deal that included his player option.
Melton has scored 20 or more points in six of his last 13 games while peaking at the right time for the Warriors, and he likely will receive a decent amount of attention from teams this summer.
