US President Donald Trump and US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle appeared together at the White House this week for the annual Greek Independence Day celebration, an event that not only honoured Greece’s independence but also fuelled discussion of a possible presidential visit to Greece later this year.
The event, held in the historic East Room of the White House, brought together diplomats, political figures, religious leaders and prominent members of the Greek-American community to celebrate the long-standing relationship between the United States and Greece. Guilfoyle, who previously had a personal connection to the Trump family through her former engagement to Donald Trump Jr., was warmly welcomed by the President and invited to join him at the podium during the celebration.

“Kimberly, Kimberly… that is my little pet name for her. I hope you come back here in, what is the term for that, 12 years?” Trump told the audience, drawing laughter from the packed room.
During the ceremony, Trump also spoke about the shared history between the two nations, drawing parallels between the American Revolution and the Greek War of Independence. He noted that both countries were founded on the principles of independence, sovereignty and self-government, and praised the Greek people for their historic struggle for freedom.

The White House Greek Independence Day reception is considered one of the most important annual events for the Greek diaspora in the United States and is attended each year by leading Greek-American figures from business, politics, diplomacy and the Church. Among those present this year were prominent members of the Greek-American community including Christos Marafatsos, Mike Manatos, Patrick Theros and businessman John Catsimatidis.
This year’s celebration comes amid growing speculation that Trump may visit Greece in early July. Reports suggest that discussions are underway for a possible stop in Athens around the time of the NATO summit scheduled for July 7 and 8 in neighbouring Turkey, which would make a visit to Greece a logical addition to the trip.
If such a visit proceeds, it would represent one of the most significant diplomatic moments in US-Greece relations in recent years and would further underline Greece’s growing strategic importance in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly in areas such as energy, defence and regional security.

Since taking up her role as US Ambassador to Greece, Guilfoyle has focused on strengthening political, economic and diplomatic ties between the two countries and increasing Greece’s visibility within the US administration. Diplomatic observers note that ensuring high-level attention on Greece from Washington is one of the most important roles of the ambassador, and a potential presidential visit would be seen as a major development in that effort.
While no official announcement has yet been made, the possibility of a visit has already generated significant interest in diplomatic and Greek-American circles, and if confirmed, a July trip could become one of the most important US-Greece diplomatic events in recent years.
