If you’re in the mood for a good movie this weekend, then thankfully streamers such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer have a load of new additions to satisfy your appetite.
Among the highlights are a “fantastic” period drama featuring Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer, as well as an acclaimed recent horror prequel.

Best movie new to Netflix this week
A Quiet Place: Day One: This 2024 entry in the Quiet Place franchise takes fans back to the start of the alien invasion, focusing on the perspective of a terminally ill woman called Sam played by Lupita Nyong’o.
As the horrific events unfold, she befriends a law student called Eric (Joseph Quinn), while Djimon Hounsou returns from A Quiet Place: Part II.
Sitting at an 86% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, Shade Studios said Day One “doesn’t overshadow the originals but expands the universe in a way that feels meaningful”. The prequel also boasts work from original director John Krasinski, who worked on the story alongside director Michael Sarnoski.

Best movie new to Prime Video this week
The Last Duel: Jodie Comer features in this historical drama, which comes from director Ridley Scott and is co-written by Matt Damon and Ben Affeck.
The Good Will Hunting team also star in film, which takes place in medieval France and follows knight Jean de Carrouges as he challenges former friend Jacques le Gris to a duel when the latter is accused of raping Jean’s wife Marguerite (played by Comer).
The Last Duel was called “rousing and epic and bloody fantastic” by Chicago Sun-Times, and a “compelling medieval cautionary tale” by The Jewish Chronicle.

Best movie new to BBC iPlayer this week
The King’s Speech: If you’re looking for more historical dramas, then this 2010 hit may do the trick. Called “rousing” by Rotten Tomatoes – where it sits at a near-perfect score – the movie tells the story of King George VI as his wife Elizabeth enlists an unconventional speech and language therapist to help with his stammer.
Colin Firth won an Oscar for his portrayal of the central monarch, starring alongside Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush. The movie also did very well at the Academy Awards in general, winning Best Picture and Best Director for Tom Hooper.

Best movie new to ITVX this week
The Suicide Squad: Widely regarded as a vast improvement on the 2016 Suicide Squad, 2021’s The Suicide Squad see the likes of Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney return as DC baddies Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang alongside new additions such as John Cena’s Peacemaker and Idris Elba’s Bloodsport.
In James Gunn’s movie, the titular group are sent to South American island Corto Maltese to destroy traces of a giant alien before it falls into local government control.
But Why Tho? suggested that “if you are looking for a film that improves on every misstep that its predecessors made, The Suicide Squad is that film”.

Best movie new to Channel 4 this week
See How They Run: This comedy mystery gem features a stellar cast including Saoirse Ronan, Sam Rockwell, Ruth Wilson, Harris Dickinson, David Oyelowo and Adrien Brody, and follows two investigators who look into the murder of crew member who was working on a movie version of a hit play.
Set in London’s West End in the 1950s, See How They Run was called an “absolute delight” by MovieJawn and “breezy, fun, and mostly very charming” by Region Free.
Other familiar faces that pop up include Reece Shearsmith, Charlie Cooper, Tim Key, Shirley Henderson, Lucian Msamati and Sian Clifford.
