The Greek government intends to strengthen Ukraine’s military by sending self-propelled howitzers, shells, and missiles valued at €199.4M. Specifically, the military aid package will include 60 M110A2 self-propelled howitzers and 150,000 203 mm shells of various types, including cluster munitions. The Czech Republic will act as an intermediary in the supply of these munitions. It is expected that the Greek National Security Council, chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, will soon make a decision on this matter. Officials note that the transfer of weapons will not reduce Greece’s defense capabilities.
Meanwhile, the United States is encouraging Athens to buy more weapons for Ukraine through the PURL initiative. There are also discussions concerning the transfer of Mirage 2000-5 multirole aircraft to Ukraine via intermediaries, in exchange for faster deliveries of Rafale fighters by France to Greece. Additionally, European allies are pressuring Greece to accept Turkey’s involvement in the EU’s €150B SAFE joint defense procurement program.
