OKLAHOMA CITY- (KOKH) — A new kind of program is coming to Oklahoma schools that will allow students to take their brainpower to the next level.
“We’re gonna coach them up in math and science after school in the evenings, two nights a week. Sort of like softball practice, but for the people that want to do that kind of practice up there,” said Po-Shen Loh, the founder of LIVE.
Through LIVE, math enthusiast high schoolers lead live streams to teach students. Loh said they’re taking that program in-person for the kids who want to be pushed more academically.
“We don’t always have time in the classroom to challenge the people who want more. We might use some of our time to go and help the people who are having some difficulty,” he said.
LIVE is partnering with the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics Foundation to not only bring this to Oklahoma schools but also offer scholarships.
“We will offer at least two full scholarships to every county in the state of Oklahoma to participate in this live program for free, starting next January, January 2027,” said Tony Cornforth, President, Oklahoma School of Science and Math.
Loh said this will be offered starting at the sixth grade and students will stay in the program for three years. He said usually, the live program costs money, and the ones paying for it are families who live in places like silicon family.
“And so I started this program to say, we’re already making money from people who have money, maybe we can play robin hood, why not? Where can we share this out so that education doesn’t become an elite game where people with money just help their kids get an advantage,” Loh said.
Cornforth said this fall, he’ll be emailing every sixth grade math teacher in the state about the partnership that includes a link so teachers can nominate students for the program.
