Peterson, the Jayhawks’ star guard, had helped lead a comeback attempt during the men’s NCAA tournament against St. John’s. He’d hit two free throws March 22 inside Viejas Arena in San Diego, California, tying the score at 65-65 with less than 30 seconds left in the second half. Earlier that half, KU had trailed by as many as 14 points in this round of 32 matchup.
