The Soviet space program rushed to complete the mission under intense Cold War pressure, and the spacecraft offered no chance of return.
Laika endured strict and often harsh training, including confinement in tight spaces, exposure to extreme noise, and rapid-force simulations. Although she showed remarkable calmness, the launch created conditions she could not survive. A technical malfunction soon caused the capsule to overheat, and she died only hours after reaching orbit.
