Luka Doncic has already served a one-game suspension after reaching the NBA’s technical foul threshold, but the Los Angeles Lakers star remains at risk of additional discipline as the regular season continues.
According to Trevor Lane of Lakers Nation, Dončić will face further automatic suspensions if he accumulates more technical fouls over the final stretch of the season.
Under NBA rules, a player is suspended for one game after receiving a 16th technical foul. For every two additional technical fouls beyond that mark, another one-game suspension is triggered.
That structure leaves Dončić in a precarious position with limited margin for error as the Lakers push toward the postseason.
Luka Doncic’s Suspension Triggered by Nets Altercation
The NBA confirmed Saturday that Dončić was suspended one game without pay after picking up his 16th technical foul during Friday’s 116-99 win over the Brooklyn Nets.
The technical came following an exchange with Nets forward Ziaire Williams after an offensive foul was called on Dončić.
A video review showed Dončić pushing Williams, who then responded by swiping at Dončić’s face. Both players were assessed double technical fouls by crew chief Sean Wright.
Dončić finished with 41 points in the victory.
He served the suspension on Monday against the Washington Wizards.
Financial Penalty Adds to Impact
Beyond the missed game, the suspension carries a financial cost.
According to ESPN, Dončić forfeited approximately $264,000, equivalent to 1/174 of his salary.
Future suspensions would result in increased financial penalties, with each additional suspension costing roughly $317,000.
Lakers Star’s Previous Technical Rescinded
Dončić had previously reached the 16-technical threshold during a verbal exchange with Goga Bitadze of the Orlando Magic.
However, the NBA rescinded that technical following a Lakers appeal, temporarily keeping Dončić below the suspension limit.
Friday’s incident ultimately pushed him back to 16, triggering the automatic suspension.
Playoff Reset Provides Relief
Lane also noted that technical foul counts reset at the start of the postseason.
Players enter the playoffs with a maximum of six technical fouls before a suspension is triggered. A player would receive a one-game suspension upon a seventh technical foul, with additional suspensions at the ninth, 11th and subsequent totals.
That reset offers Dončić relief once the playoffs begin, but only after he navigates the remainder of the regular season.
Lakers Enter Critical Stretch
Dončić is expected to return Tuesday against the Cleveland Cavaliers, with seven games remaining in the regular season.
The timing is significant, as the Lakers remain in a competitive race for playoff positioning in the Western Conference.
Dončić’s availability is central to that push given his role as the team’s primary scorer and playmaker.
Dominant Production Continues
The suspension comes during one of Dončić’s most productive stretches of the season.
Over his last 12 games, he has averaged 39.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 2.5 steals, while continuing to lead the NBA in scoring.

With every two additional technical fouls resulting in another suspension, Dončić must avoid further infractions to remain available.
