37th annual Savannah Music Festival underway

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – The 37th annual Savannah Music Festival wrapped up its fifth day of live performances Friday. Twenty-nine more shows are scheduled over the next seven days.

The two-week concert series highlights several genres, from chamber music and jazz to American roots and international music. Performances take place at several venues across Savannah, including the Lucas and Trustee’s theaters.

Ryan McMaken, the festival’s artistic director, said the festival hosts a wide range of talented artists.

“We’ve got some of the world’s best here,” McMaken said. “We do present a lot of music from the American South, which is the origin of so many musical styles here, or the place of origin, but we also have music from West Africa, from Canada, from Ireland.”

McMaken said his favorite part of the festival is watching the community discover new genres and artists.

Three-time Grammy winner John Scofield took the stage Friday night. His jazz trio played to a sold-out crowd at Kehoe Iron Works.

Each concert is a ticketed event. Tickets can be bought at the Savannah Music Festival’s website.
