Charlie Day, Luigi’s voice in ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ is ready for a Luigi’s Mansion movie

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ opens this week, and finally, Mario and his friends are returning to the big screen. And while we already know of a few cameos on the way, and there’s public interest in a Super Smash Bros. movie, there’s still so much about the Super Mario worlds we’d love to see—and given the positive reception of the first film, a spin-off could be a hit.

One of these ideas involves the possibility of a movie inspired by Luigi’s Mansion, something that Luigi’s voice actor, Charlie Day, would love to see happen. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Day discussed this possibility alongside his co-stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Keegan-Michael Key, noting that “it would be fun.”

I would be thrilled to do Luigi’s Mansion, just because it’s such a fun game,” Day said. “And not that you would make it like a horror movie for kids, but it could have some more sort of jump scares in it, which would be fun. It does seem like it would make a great movie, but they don’t put me in charge of movie studios and for good reason. I got no idea. I wouldn’t want the [studio boss] job, personally. Don’t give me that. Yeah, it’d be a lot of pressure. But if they do [Luigi’s Mansion], I’m in.”

Nintendo’s expanding movie plans

This isn’t the first time there’s been talk of a potential animated film based on Luigi’s Mansion. In ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie,’ there was a scene that could be seen as a proof of concept, where Luigi searches for Mario in a castle. After the release of the first movie, the idea of making a Luigi’s Mansion film—or even a Mario Golf movie—was considered. For now, Nintendo registered something related to “Untitled Donkey Kong Motion Picture” last summer.
