Dbeibah calls for accelerating maritime border demarcation with Malta and Greece


Libyan Prime Minister, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, has called on the National Committee for Land and Maritime Border Demarcation, that is affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, to accelerate procedures related to the demarcation of maritime borders with Malta and Greece, stressing the importance of preserving Libya’s sovereign rights in its territorial waters.

Dbeibah held a meeting on Monday at his office at the Cabinet headquarters in Tripoli, attended by Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Taher Al-Baour, Head of the Border Demarcation Committee Mohamed Al-Harari, and Minister of State for African Affairs Fathallah Al-Zeni.

According to the government platform “Hakomitna,” Dbeibah was briefed during the meeting on the progress of the national committee’s work over the past six months. The briefing included updates on ongoing discussions with Malta and Greece regarding maritime border demarcation.

The platform added that committee head Mohamed Al-Harari presented a comprehensive overview of the current situation, highlighting the main challenges and obstacles facing the completion of this file.

During the meeting, Dbeibah reaffirmed the importance of safeguarding Libya’s sovereign rights in its territorial waters and adhering to relevant international laws and agreements in a way that protects national interests. 

He also stressed the need to continue technical and legal coordination and to accelerate the pace of work to finalize maritime border demarcation procedures, in a manner that enhances regional stability and supports the country’s strategic interests.

The maritime border demarcation committee has been engaged for months in negotiations with Malta and Greece, and the Greek foreign minister is expected to visit Tripoli on Wednesday to continue discussions on this issue.
