There have been no shortage of personal accolades for San Antonio Spurs young big man Victor Wembanyama, but what the French superstar accomplished Monday night might go down as one of his most impressive performances.

Wembanyama finished with 41 points and 16 rebounds in a 129-114 win against the Chicago Bulls, including a double double in just 8 minutes and 31 seconds. According to the Associated Press, it was the fastest time in NBA history. Wembanyama passes Jim Washington, who as a memeber of the St. Louis Hawks recorded a double-double in nine minutes against the New York Knicks on March 6, 1966, according to the AP.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget how dominant Wembayama has been to start his NBA career. It’s also becoming increasingly difficult to contextualize his accomplishments and milestones.

Wembayama’s resume already places him in rare company in league history. In fact, NBA analyst Zach Lowe already made the argument for why Wemby might be the best defender in league history.

After being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Wembanyama quickly emerged as one of the league’s most impactful two-way players thanks to a unique blend of height, length, speed, and defensive instincts.

He earned NBA Rookie of the Year honors and has continued to blossom since year one.

Becoming the fastest player in league history to record a double-double is just the latest example of how quickly he’s redefining expectations. For a player just in the third year of his career, Wembanyama is already building a legacy that suggests he could become one of, if not THE, defining stars of his generation.

What to Expect From the Spurs This Season

What would really cap off an impressive season for Wembanyama, who is in the conversation to win league MVP honors, would be to bring home an NBA championship. San Antonio, which boasts five titles in franchise history, has not won one since 2014.

The Spurs, riding a nine-game winning streak, are firmly in position to make a deep postseason run thanks to the play of Wembanyama and his teammates. With just seven games remaining in the regular season, San Antonio sits at a 57-18 and in second place in the NBA Western Conference standings. The Spurs are 2.5 games behind the first-place and defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, and have clinched at least the No. 2 seed for the playoffs.

With one of the league’s best point differentials, the Spurs look like a legitimate title contender heading into the playoffs.
