Greek Politicians Issue Statements Honouring 1821 Revolution

Greek political leaders issued messages marking Greek Independence Day, highlighting themes of unity, democracy, peace and national dignity inspired by the Greek War of Independence.

Nikos Androulakis stated that 25 March represented the spirit of Hellenism and emphasised that the 1821 Revolution sent a global message that determination and faith in struggle could overcome even the strongest opponents. He said Greeks envisioned an independent and democratic state, reflected in the revolutionary constitutions, and stressed the responsibility to preserve the principles and values of those who sacrificed for the country. He called for a Greece characterised by national dignity, social justice, strong institutions and high expectations for society.

Sokratis Famellos highlighted the duty to strengthen the struggle for a just and strong Greece that played a leading role in peaceful policy. He honoured the sacrifices of the heroes of 1821 and emphasised responsibility towards history and future generations. He stressed the importance of peace as the greatest good and called for a dynamic, multidimensional foreign policy that strengthened national sovereign rights.

Dimitris Koutsoumpas said the 1821 Revolution continued to inspire modern society, demonstrating that organised and determined people fighting for justice and progress could overcome contradictions and dead ends of the past.

Kyriakos Velopoulos emphasised the dual significance of the day as both a national and religious celebration, referencing the Feast of the Annunciation. He called for unity, noting that national division in the past had led to internal conflict, and stressed the importance of maintaining national cohesion.

The anniversary commemorated the start of the 1821 Revolution, which led to the establishment of the modern Greek state and remained a central symbol of national identity and democratic values.
