Paramount+ is the target for an iconic war movie.
War is a topic that never ceases to become the backdrop for striking movies and TV shows. After all, there is always a new one to write about, with different players and roles in the world. In recent years, war movies like 1917, All Quiet on the Western Front, Warfare, and more have explored different wars and takes on the minds of those sent to fight in them.
That said, when one thinks of the genre, most of the best war movies come from many years ago. For instance, Apocalypse Now is a psychological war thriller that showcases how the characters slowly lose themselves as they traverse the Vietnam jungle, while Schindler’s List is a tear-jerker led by Liam Neeson’s tour de force performance. That said, the greatest war movie of all time is another.
Saving Private Ryan will arrive on Paramount+ on Wednesday, April 1st. The new month will see quite a few exciting releases on the streaming service. On the movie side, franchises like Paranormal Activity, Jackass, G.I. Joe, Terminator, and more will drop multiple films at once on Paramount+. Other all-timers like True Grit, The Social Network, and more also release on the same day as Saving Private Ryan.
Saving Private Ryan was released in theaters all the way back on July 24, 1998. It is directed by none other than Steven Spielberg, who has helmed countless game-changing movies, such as Jurassic Park, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, the Indiana Jones franchise, and so much more. The war movie would go on to become a box office hit and a critical darling.
Saving Private Ryan had a reported budget of around $70 million, which means it needed to land in the $140 million to $175 million range to break even. Not only did the Spielberg movie manage to reach that mark, but it went on to outgross it by a wide margin. Saving Private Ryan ended its global box office run with $482.3 million.
The 1998 war epic was received well by critics and moviegoers alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, Saving Private Ryan stands tall at a near-perfect 94% critics’ score, with its audience score being even better, at 95%. On IMDB, the war movie has a high 8.6 score, currently making it the 275th most popular movie with users. On Metacritic, Saving Private Ryan has a 91 critics’ score.
The R-rated war movie ended up taking home five statuettes at the 71st Academy Awards, including a Best Director Oscar for Spielberg. Saving Private Ryan is focused on a group of soldiers led by Tom Hanks’ Captain John Miller as they search for Matt Damon’s Private James Francis Ryan to bring him home after his three brothers died in World War II.
