The Chicago Bulls released official statement on why they abruptly waived former No. 5 pick Jaden Ivey.
The NBA world is still reeling after the abrupt news on axed star Jaden Ivey.
Ivey has become one of the biggest stories in sports after he took to Instagram Live to share his comments on the NBA’s advocacy of the LGBTQA community.
The former basketball star’s comments sparked immediate controversy and intense reactions from people all over the world.
Following his remarks, the Chicago Bulls released Ivey for “conduct detrimental to the team” on Monday.
Ivey has taken to social media multiple times to discuss sensitive topics after he was shut down by the Bulls last week after a knee injury.
Not only are Ivey’s actions a major talking point, his release has put him in a unique category in the historical confines of the NBA. Ivey is 24 years old and has flashed star potential, but his chances of getting another opportunity to play in the league have likely taken a big hit.
Jaden Ivey joins a few players on a rare list
Ivey was selected fifth overall in the 2022 draft by a Detroit Pistons franchise looking to craft a rising contender around star point guard Cade Cunningham.
Ivery pieced together a strong career at Purdue University and ballooned his stock quickly, making him a consensus top prospect and someone viewed as a potential game-changer for an organization.
After years of mediocrity, the Pistons were optimistic a big turnaround was on the horizon (that has come true!), but Ivey ultimately someone Detroit could wrap its arms around.
After 3 1/2 productive seasons with the franchise — including a shining rookie season in which Ivery averaged better than 16 points per game while playing over 31 minutes a contest — Ivey’s time with the Pistons came to an end due to a combination of durability issues and inconsistent play.
Detroit moved him to the Bulls ahead of the February trade deadline, giving Ivey a chance to start fresh. But a hopeful new beginning transitioned into perhaps his final stop.
Chicago opting to release Ivey means that the 24-year-old becomes just the ninth player ever to be released while playing on a four-year rookie deal.
According to The Athletic’s Joel Lorenzi, Ivey is the first player since 2017 lottery pick Josh Jackson to be dropped before playing out his rookie pact.
Will Ivey see opportunity ever again?
This situation feels very isolated because of how sensitive it is. Ivey’s release had nothing to do with basketball and everything to do with all else.
Unfortunately, it appears difficult that Ivey will be offered another NBA contract because of the PR nightmare that his comments have created.
Ivey reportedly has also been dealing with mental health struggles. Not that NBA teams look down on players who deal with such issues, but when putting that together with his controversial remarks, teams will understandably be hesitant to give him a chance.
Ivey’s comments and subsequent release has made for a truly unexpected late regular season bombshell.
