Greek authorities extended the Visa Express programme granting short-stay visas to Turkish citizens visiting islands in the eastern Aegean, with the scheme now remaining in force until April 2027, including on Mytilene.

The fast-track visa initiative first came into effect in April 2024 on islands of the North Aegean following a meeting between Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The European Commission approved the renewal of the programme last year, allowing its continuation for an additional year.
The scheme enables Turkish visitors to obtain short-term visas upon arrival at selected islands, supporting tourism activity and strengthening economic links between Greece and neighbouring Turkey.
The Regional Governor of the North Aegean described the extension as a positive development for local economies, emphasising that the programme has already demonstrated its value by boosting tourism, improving connectivity and supporting economic growth across the islands.
Officials highlighted the importance of continued cooperation with government authorities and the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs in securing the extension. Regional authorities stated they will continue to advocate for policies that promote development and outward engagement for island communities.
The Visa Express initiative forms part of broader efforts to encourage sustainable tourism and enhance cross-border relations in the eastern Aegean.
