UPDATE: Severe Weather in Greece on Wednesday and Thursday – Red alert for Attica, other areas


A ‘code red’ weather warning remains in effect for several areas of Greece on Wednesday, April 1, including Attica, following the update of the Emergency Bulletin of Hazardous Weather Phenomena, initially issued by the National Meteorological Service (EMY) on March 31.

Severe weather is forecast on Wednesday and Thursday across most parts of the country, with prolonged and intense rainfall and thunderstorms, and possibly local hailstorms.

On Wednesday, in eastern Greece, east to southeast winds of 7 to 9 Beaufort will blow, reaching locally up to 10 Beaufort in the Dodecanese.

Heavy snowfall is expected on Wednesday in the mountainous areas of Epirus and Macedonia.
Strong rain and thunderstorms are forecast as follows:

On Wednesday, April 1:
a. In the Ionian Islands and southwestern Peloponnese (orange warning).
b. In eastern Peloponnese until late at night (red warning).
c. In eastern Central Greece, Evia, Thessaly, and the Sporades from the afternoon until late at night (red warning).
d. In Pieria from the afternoon until late at night (orange warning).
e. In Attica from early afternoon until late at night (red warning).
f. In the Cyclades islands and Crete from early afternoon until late at night (orange warning).
g. In the islands of the eastern Aegean from late afternoon until late at night (orange warning).
h. In the Dodecanese from late afternoon (red warning).

On Thursday, April 2:
a. In western and southern Peloponnese until late at night (orange warning).
b. In northern Evia and eastern Thessaly (regional units of Larissa and Magnesia, including the Sporades) until midday (orange warning).
c. In eastern Central Greece until the morning hours (orange warning).
d. In the regional units of Central Macedonia (Chalkidiki and Serres) until late afternoon (orange warning).
e. In eastern Macedonia and Thrace from early morning until the afternoon (orange warning).
f. In Crete (mainly western and southern parts) from midday until late at night (red warning).
g. In the eastern Aegean islands from late afternoon (orange warning).
h. In the Dodecanese until the early hours of the day (orange warning).
