The Vintage Advantage
Vintage shouldn’t just hang in your closet for the occasional outing—it belongs in your daily rotation. The key, says longtime collector Renee Rangel, owner of Moontower Vintage in Austin, Texas, is balance. “I start with one statement vintage piece and then ground it with sleek, contemporary basics.”
Mixing eras and styles is enjoyable, too. “Mixing eras in your clothing and accessories will create a personal curated style that no one else will have,” says Laura Simmons, owner of Studio 74 Vintage in Fort Worth, Texas. “It is also fun to pair contrasting styles—like wearing a chunky boot with a romantic lace dress or throwing a leather fringe jacket over a tank with jeans and heels.”
Western vintage, in particular, carries timeless appeal. “Western fashion is rooted in blending practicality with durability,” says Simmons. “The Western vintage pieces were utilitarian and needed to be functional and serve a purpose, but eventually these vintage items became fashion.” These elements ground an outfit while adding history and character.
When shopping vintage, think treasure hunt. “My tip is to shop with curiosity and patience,” says Rangel. “Look for pieces that speak to you. Pay attention to quality, and remember that each garment holds a story waiting for its next chapter. Mix eras, play with texture, and don’t be afraid to push the envelope.” At the end of the day, and the beginning of an outfit, vintage is about storytelling—honoring the past while making it unmistakably
your own.
