Storm Erminio has swept across Greece, battering Athens and the wider Attica region, leaving one person dead while triggering severe flooding, power outages, and major disruptions. Authorities warn that hazardous conditions are ongoing, with the worst not yet over.
A 55-year-old Polish worker was found dead in Nea Makri after being swept away by raging floodwaters and trapped beneath a vehicle. Firefighters recovered his body during a rescue operation involving four personnel and two fire engines.
Deadly flooding in Athens suburbs
Witnesses described scenes of chaos as powerful torrents surged through streets, dragging vehicles and turning roads into fast-moving rivers. One resident who discovered the victim said the force of the water was overwhelming, with levels reaching around half a meter but moving at dangerous سرعت.
The man was located just meters from his home, pinned beneath a car after being carried away by the current.
Widespread damage across Attica
Authorities reported significant damage in at least 10 areas across Attica, including Voula, northern Glyfada, Alimos, Aspropyrgos, Ano Liosia, Sounio, Paiania, Nea Smyrni, the Platonic Academy, and Cholargos.
Emergency services received more than 500 calls, mainly for fallen trees, debris removal, and water pumping operations. Strong winds also caused multiple power outages across affected neighborhoods.
Traffic disruptions were widespread, particularly in eastern Attica around Spata, where several roads were closed due to flooding and dangerous driving conditions.
Emergency alerts and safety warnings
Residents across Attica received emergency alerts via Greece’s 112 system, urging them to limit movement to essential travel only.
Meteorologists warn the coming hours are critical, with further heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected. In some parts of the Athens basin, rainfall could exceed 50mm in a short period, sharply increasing the risk of flash flooding.
Islands also hit by severe weather
The storm’s impact extended beyond mainland Greece. On Poros, flooding destroyed a small bridge and swept away two vehicles, while emergency crews rescued two elderly residents. Schools on the island have been closed as a precaution.
Severe conditions were also reported on Sikinos, Hydra, and Kimolos, where strong waves inundated coastal zones. In Rhodes, emergency alerts were issued overnight as intense weather struck parts of the Dodecanese.
The storm system, driven by a deep low-pressure front, continues to move across the country, with rapidly shifting conditions and high rainfall intensity posing the greatest threat—especially in densely populated urban areas like Athens.
