The San Antonio Spurs have become a team that no one wants to play. They sit second in the Western Conference standings and have an outside shot of taking that top spot. They are just two games behind the Thunder for that top spot.
Victor Wembanyama has been the biggest reason why the Spurs have made this leap this season. He has been healthy this year after the first two years of his career were cut short. He has jumped into the MVP race and has a real solid shot of winning it.
After a win over Golden State, Wembanyama made it clear that he doesn’t care about the team’s lack of postseason experience. He still thinks they can win it all.
Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama Doesn’t Care About Lack of Postseason Success
While appearing on SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt, Wembanyama was asked about that lack of postseason experience. He was very clear in her answer.
“We don’t have playoff experience, right? Screw it. I mean, that’s all we got. We’re not going to play any different because it is this way. I mean, we’re still gonna play 100% and try to win this championship. Screw it.”
The Spurs are finally fully healthy this season. After an early injury to De’Aarron Fox, the roster is now the healthiest it has been all season long. With Wembanyama playing at an MVP level, the team has a real shot to compete for a championship, even without the playoff experience that’s usually necessary.
San Antonio has the fourth-best offense in the league. A lot of that is because Wembanyama has decided to take more shots around the rim, increasing his efficiency. Of course, he still takes threes. He just takes smarter ones than he did in his first two seasons.
Victor Wembanyama is Already an NBA Superstar
The Spurs have the right combination of players around Wembanyama, as well. San Antonio has players who can shoot and feed him the ball. Defensively, they have length on the perimeter to help give them a smothering defense. They have the third-best defense in the league.
Wembanyama has ascended to the level of being an NBA superstar in his third season. He is no longer a novelty with a lot of potential. He is starting to utilize that potential, and that’s why he is neck-and-neck with Shai Gilegous-Alexander for the MVP.
Heading into the postseason, the Spurs will be one of the scariest teams in the West. They have so much talent, even if they don’t have the experience that teams normally need to succeed. The Thunder had very little postseason experience before winning it all last season.
San Antonio seems to have Oklahoma City’s number, as well. That means they should be able to handle almost anything that is thrown at them in the postseason. Wembanyama is ready for that experience as he searches for his first NBA championship.
If the Spurs win it all, Wembanyama will be considered the best player in the NBA heading into next year.
